A Black Belt Test
… The
Human Face of Karate
20 of you, some working on your Black Belt, others your 1st Degree. Your Test begins Dec 19th and I’m very proud of each and
every one of you!
My Black Belt Test was 35 years ago, and I can still recall the whole event like it was yesterday.
I remember the smell of the mats; the sight of my opponents I had to spar against, and their faces with that look of, “Sorry to have to put you through this, buddy”; the voices of parents and spectators yelling at me to “get back up”, “keep on going”; the sweat that was in stinging my eyes; the boards that almost didn’t break; and looking at my Dad and my Seh Ssung (Master Instructor) when I wanted to vomit...
I remember even more vividly, giving my Black Belt Essay speech,
in front of 500 spectators, video camera pointed at my face... with a
microphone and all! (Yes, you will do this too.)
After 3-5 hours of demonstrating techniques, and 1000’s of kicks,
punches, blocks, etc. there was sparring for 15 consecutive rounds, against 15
fresh opponents. The only people who get to rest are your opponents!
Next, was board-breaking. Each of us had to do a four station
break. (That’s where four separate people hold your boards and you have to
break them one after the other -- no stopping!) Now, here is a solid fact, by
the time you are ready for your black belt exam, you’ve effectively learned how
to communicate, negotiate, be-nice-to, and persuade total strangers.
Here’s why: You are not allowed to have your best friends hold
your boards! You must approach newer students to be your “holder” for your
exam. That’s the rule. (There are reasons, specific reasons, that Karate develops
so many qualities in kids. Psychologists can’t put their finger on it, but are
the first ones to say that it does more than any other activity. Well, the
board breaking thing is just a small example) Somehow I managed (at 12 years
old) to cajole 5 white belt adults into showing up on a sunny, Saturday
afternoon and hold boards for me!
End result, confidence through communication.
Now, you get three chances to break your boards. You miss - you’re
out! You could literally hear a pin drop when kids, as well as adults,
were on their third and final try!
Finally, the essay! This part we were the most nervous
about. You have to (as you or your child will) submit a one minute essay
to be recited at the end of your exam.
You could sense many spent a whole month writing their Black Belt
Essays. We were told to title our essays, “What I’ve learned from Seh
Ssung”. And the reasons I say this is because before the exam... you’ve
have no idea, that when you make your speech you do it AFTER THE SPARRING! Well,
when we got up to recite the well-crafted speech we thought would make us look
so smart -- we would get all choked-up while thanking parents, spouses,
classmate, and extended family.
Why - even as kids, during that test... we became real. We became
genuine.
Gone, were the faces that you can maintain when the going is easy. Gone,
were the superficial masks that we get so accustom to “putting on”. People who
I thought would pass -- failed! And, people who thought would never
make it through the 3 hour ordeal -- surprisingly passed!
I remember one kid during his essay, it was so incredible, he was
17 years old, he started when he was 12 and was the next youngest kid in our
class next to me. The one thing I remember was his Mom had to nag him
constantly to come to Karate. He began talking about how his “the
reason he was getting his black belt tonight”, but the most emotional part was
when this young man said, “...and most of all, I want to especially thank my
you Mom for never letting me quit...” everyone started to bawl! He
was thanking her for the “extra push” we all wish we had from time to time when
we were younger.
As far as my essay goes I read three lines and then I just put it
aside, and spoke from the heart. In fact, that’s what happened with many of us.
On that day -- we became instant public speakers, instant communicators. What
seemed like four or five years of kicking and punching at targets all sort of
came together. Parents couldn’t believe it.
You see, once a candidate got up there... in their sweat, and
their breathlessness... they could only quote like nine or ten sentences from
the essay because we were too tired and couldn’t concentrate enough to read the
pleasantries we’d so cleverly penned just a few short weeks earlier. It was
awesome. We had the guts to just wing it and ended up looking like pros!
Everyone knew what was happening too. Everyone knew it came from our heart and
not our head.
It was right then and there that I knew I had the confidence to do
anything I put my mind to. Experiencing the Black Belt Test at that young age
made you “different” than other kids. It made you feel like you were made to do
something special, something great with your life. You just knew that there is
nothing that can stop you except for you.
I began to act and conduct myself so differently that teachers
began making comments on my report card like, “He’s so in control of his
emotions... Demonstrates Leadership Skills... Always Focuses On Solving
Problems...
Years later I heard my Seh Ssung refer to this as the “human face
of karate.”
It’s like the stuff you hear about but can’t explain. I mean,
everyone talks about how martial artists look at things differently. And it’s
true. We do. We look at everything differently; time, problems, service, discipline,
stewardship, courage. Maybe it’s because the martial arts inherently provide a
platform to actually live-out the stuff that you are trying to instill in your
children through words.
Words are not enough. Even example is not enough. Experience is everything. My Seh Ssung always said, “If you hear something -- you’ll forget it. If you see something -- you’ll recall it. If you read something -- you’ll remember it. But is not until you DO... That you will learn it!”
Yes, karate is fun. Yes, karate is recreational. But when
you look at Karate as educational first, then it truly becomes rewarding.
Karate was not very popular in the 70’s so these are things that
most of my childhood friends never experienced. And here we are, 35 years
later. Many of my peers (not all of them of course) are on medication for one
illness or another, some have lousy habits they wish they could “shake”. A few
complain about how “life’s not fair” or how they got a “bad deal”... and how
“the economy” sucks! I can’t imagine feeling like a victim like that.
Now, would karate have helped them? They tell me, “yes!” In fact,
they say things like, “Wow, Doyle -- why didn’t you take ME to karate when we
were little? I would love to have gotten my black belt! Look at you, you’re in
shape, your upbeat, your positive, does karate teach that? Did you learn that
from your Master?” The answer is a resounding... “Of course!”
But my father said it best… In 1981 I got to travel
around the country on a National Competitions team. A local newspaper
covered my progress and wrote a few articles. They asked my Dad “How has
Karate helped Doyle?” “Are you kidding?” My Dad replied. “Last year
Doyle and I ran into an old Army buddy of mine who had served with me in Korea.
At a time when most of my friends kids where experimenting with drugs and
having general bad attitudes, My Teenage Son looked my friend in the eye, shook
his hand and said ‘Nice to meet you, Sir. And thank you for Serving Our
Country.’ For me, that was the moment it was worth every dollar I
had ever spent on his lessons, sparring gear and tournament fees. It was
worth every hour I had spent sitting on the sidelines watching him practice
moves I thought were impossible for a kid to perform. You could have
offered me a million dollars for his Black Belt and I would have turned you
down without a second thought. I couldn’t have been more proud!”

Think about who will read this! Think about those you could help out there in our community, right now ... Somewhere in Roseville:
- A child stays home, even on nice sunny days - playing video games. Her mother is puzzled. She has no idea that her daughter is afraid to play outside, with children who are more physically active. Even though there is no real danger, she feels intimidated!
- A young boy struggles in school and at home. He just can’t seem to control himself. His father begins to think the teacher from last year might be right... maybe he should be tested for ADD! If the boy were older, maybe he could explain that he is hungry for structure, attention, and some positive recognition!
- A nice young lady struggles with a weight problem. She turns down the few invitations to participate in team sports that she does receive. She is uncomfortable whit her physical appearance and doesn’t believe that she would be “good” at anything. Her parents, believing that she is “just a little shy” are not even aware that she is experiencing a confidence problem.

Great Start Last Night in the first Black Belt Test Prep Class. See you all Saturday for your first Boot Camp!
ReplyDeleteREMEMBER -
"We are all Born to Win! But to Be a Winner You must Plan to Win, Prepare to Win, and Expect to Win!"
~ Zig Ziggler
The class last night was really good! I was surprised about how nervous I felt!! I know what I need to work on and I will continue to push myself. I WILL BE A WINNER! I am anxious and nervous about the unkown of tomorrow but I will push myself thru whatever we face. Good Luck everyone! Believe and Achieve!

ReplyDeleteI'm so ready for saturday! I'm going to run my hardest. To do my best on the run. So ready to win, it is easy to do nothing but it is harder to win. I'm going to practice my push ups , plank, and forms. To win it takes perfect practices. lets do good on the practice tomorrow!!
ReplyDeleteYesterday I was pretty nervous, but now I know what I need to work on. I need to practice my creative form and my conditioning. I am excited about tomorrow. I am confident about my mile and ready to get stronger. I know if I try hard, I will win.
ReplyDeleteAfter the preparation class, I know that I need to practice and train hard for the next six weeks. As we say in class, "BRING IT ON, SIR!"
ReplyDeleteHello this half-year's group of testers! This is my third time doing this, which makes me feel happy and confident, but no less nervous. Last night made me nervous when I thought I might not test, but now that I realize the mistake made, I feel great. Tomorrow is going to be a little nerve-racking for everyone as always, but I'm sure all will be well, seeing as we did most of the physical stuff yesterday. I am a winner because I have not given up on karate in the four years that I have now done it. I am a winner because if, last night, I found out I would not be testing, I would still come to classes, and work my hardest to jump in to the flow again next time. I am a winner because my mother and I already have a running schedule that we will stick to and, if need be, change as is necessary. I expect I shall be the first of this group to get my first degree black belt, and I shall get it next summer. I am a winner because I was born to be one, I expect myself to live up to the standards of one, and I plan to be one every day. See you all tomorrow!

Testing for second tab
I am ready to start the toughest part of my Black Belt journey with my kids and close friend. I have been working hard the last couple of months preparing for the run. I will not only continue to improve my run time, but work on improving on all of my forms, self-defenses, kick sets and weapons. Am looking forward to see what tomorrow brings.
ReplyDeleteWell this is my second round of boot camp. The most heart pumping, body training, and get fit place to be on your Staurday's. Well can't wait to take it on again, because last year it helped me to get fit and in shape. I say good luck to all the candidates and black belts testing for their tab
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Donovan Choa
I am very excited about the first bootcamp to come tommorow, Nov,3,2012. I have been doing extra running so i can improve my mile time. Another bit of the training for bootcamp is practicing my creatve form, and the 6 basic sets. I have been training to win, and I believe I can win, and most of all, I can WIN!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have been training for the past 6 months, so I would be ready to retake my Black Belt test. My run time has greatly improved, so I know I will make the 8 minutes this time. I can't wait for tomorrow, the first bootcamp. I know I will earn my Black Belt this time.
ReplyDeleteI am nervous and excited at the same time about tomorrows bootcamp. I have worked hard on my forms and I am proud that I have been getting my mile under 8 minutes. I hope I can do it tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI was pretty nervous when I got to the dojo last night. I tried my hardest and now I know what I need to work on. When I woke up this morning my back hurt. My last run was my best time so far and I plan to try to make it better. I am both nervous and excited about what we are going to do in boot camp, but I know that if I do my best I will be a winner.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was fun. We finally got to spar with our rib protectors and show our creative forms. I hope tomorrow doesn’t rain while we're training for black belt. I wonder what Seh Ssung is going to have us do? I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win! I’m super excited to earn my black belt! ~Kai S.
ReplyDeleteThe first day of boot camp was tough, but fun. I am glad that I am getting stronger, but I know that I need to work on my mile-run and my conditioning.
ReplyDeleteToday was a harsh workout but fun. I know I need to work on my push ups so I will get stronger.
ReplyDeleteWoW!!!!I think that says it all! I am so proud of all the canidates and black belts, everyone stayed tough and never gave up! We are winners!! For my self, I have finally broken my 8:32 mile and came in this time at 8:10!!! I am so excited the 8 min. mile is so close! I know I can do it!! Now I just hope I can walk tomorrow, let alone do some running!! Looking forward to Tuesday classes!
ReplyDeletetoday was difficult and definetly cold but i'm ready to push through and try my hardest.
ReplyDeleteFirst boot camp is done. That was a great workout. I say good job and god luck to all the candidates and black belts.
ReplyDeleteToday may have made us sweat, but we never give up. If bootcamp helps us earn our black belt or tab, it’s worth being all muddy and sweaty. My favorite part about today was dragging our partners on their backs. Good luck for all our up-coming bootcamp days everyone! ~ Kai S.
ReplyDeleteGreat workout today! Special kudos to Emily and Alyssa for hanging tough even when you didn't feel your best. Also awesome runs by Kristy and Debbie! Good job everyone. Keep working hard. Your goal is within reach.

ReplyDeleteOur first bootcamp was a great workout and we will all be stronger for having completed it. No one gave up and we should all be proud of ourselves. As for myself, I can't believe the difference in my running. It's true that hard work and a little guidance can make a great difference. Looking forward to see what challenges the next week will bring.
ReplyDeleteThe first bootcamp was a complete success! Special congragulations to all canidates, black belts to. The hardest thing for me was carrying the cage fitness bag down and back. I am excited to see what next weeks bootcamp will bring for the canidates and black belts.
ReplyDeleteTodays bootcamp was really challenging. I improved on my run time, and was able to run the mile in under 8 minutes. The hardest part was carrying the cage fitness bags, but I didn't give up!
ReplyDeleteBootcamp was a challenge but also fun. I had my fastest mile time yet and I hope to keep improving. I am proud of all of us for working hard and finishing strong.
ReplyDeleteYesterday I ran my best mile time and felt like I was gaining muscle by the minute. While we were doing our little sprints I thought I couldn't make it because it was tiring, but I pushed myself and made it through. Yesterday was very tiring and sort of fun. I know that all of us can make it through and get better every boot camp. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sore from yesterday. let's do better! See you on Tuesday. .....Nicholas Chalko
ReplyDeleteWhat a weekend! My body is sore but I know this means that I worked hard. I can't believe I am going through my second boot camp. I am most concerned about my asthma but whatever happens I know that I am trying my best. Good luck to all of the new candidates and to all the other black belts...we are in this together!
ReplyDeleteHannah
When I first started boot camp, I thought that it would be a regular class as always but I thought wrong. It was a lot harder and I have to do this for 7 weeks! But now I can train harder than ever. Now I have to give it ALL I'VE GOT to be my BEST!
ReplyDeleteGood luck Black Belt candidates. Boot camp is a blast!
ReplyDeleteNovember 2, 2012
ReplyDeleteLast night's candidate class was a blast. I can't wait till the next candidate class. I was a little nervous when I walked into the dojo. I wasn't sure what we were going to do. I didn't realize I had so many moves in my creative form. I'm nervous about tomorrow but I know boot camp will help me to get my black belt. I am going to try my hardest.
November 4, 2012
ReplyDeleteYesterday's boot camp was not as fun as I thought it would be. It was really tough. I just kept trying and trying. By the time I got I was really, really tired. I think next boot camp will be better.
BOOT CAMP! After boot camp I was really sore, but now I know what I need to work on. I did run my best mile time, ever! GOOD LUCK, EVERYONE
ReplyDeleteBoot camp may be a challenge, but getting there on time is complicated but important. Thats why my mom had an idea. On mondays and wednesday I go to class and on tuesday and thursday I only go to boot camp. Now it's simple.
ReplyDeleteThat was a great workout guys! Yesterday was sweaty and good! I need to work on my punches while I'm doing forms. Good luck canidates and Tab testers!
ReplyDeleteYesterday I didn't get to show Seh Ssung one of our forms so I don't know if I need to work on it but I do know I need to work on my creative form. Today I forgot a little bit of the flag form but Emily helped and now I am ready and exited to learn the rest of the form.
ReplyDeleteHello all! Yesterday made me feel a lot better than I thought it would! Great workout! Great job everyone! Never thought I'd say this, but can't wait for tomorrow! Working on all self defenses and my three BB forums. I'm also planning to work on basic forums and all fight sets next week and "Change That Icky Kick" for both. This week, I worked harder than usual on my run, but it still needs work... Next week, I'll start working on my pushups, plank, etc., and Austyn, from last year, believe it or not, agreed to do some of the training with me. See y'all tomorrow!
ReplyDelete~Shoana
Yesterday was OK and I now know what I really need to work on. I'm sort of looking forward to tomorrow. I hope I can beet my best mile time. Good luck to everybody and have a good weekend.:)
ReplyDeleteSo it has just been a few hours since bootcamp ended and I am already feeling it. I was happy to see my mile time stay the same, given it was the first run in the cold weather. Time to start getting our lungs use to that cold weather. We all really had to dig deep today as we ran 3 miles, not consectutively. I turly believe that if all continue to give our best at these bootcamps we will be ready and successful when it comes to our 8 minute mile. I know I also need to continue to work on my kick sets and forms. Have a relaxing weekend!
ReplyDeleteToday's bootcamp was fun but it was also really difficult. I really pushed myself with my third mile. I know that all this hard work will pay off in the end.
ReplyDeleteLast week was WOW!! This week it's OMG!!!!!! This bootcamp was really hard but I loved how we all were able to push thru and continue!! I know that this experience has really taught us all that we are able to push our bodies harder than our minds think we can. My family learned that eating Chinese food the night before does not work for us!! We will stick to pasta for next friday! I am so proud of everyone! Keep up the good work! WE CAN DO THIS!EXPECT TO WIN!!!
ReplyDeleteThis bootcamp was a lot harder than last week but i still managed to play the second half of my soccer game. :)
ReplyDeleteBoot camp was so fun, good job
ReplyDeleteevery one. let's run faster. Even though it is cold will need to do harder. Good enough is not prefect!!

Today my leg hurt and the extra 2 miles didn't help. But I made it through. Otherwise it was A good workout. I know everyone can make it if they try. Only 4 more weeks to go.
ReplyDeleteToday was a great day we ran almost 4 Miles!! Thats more than a 5k Run!!! Today trained us very well. Remember Good Enough is the Enemy of excellence.
ReplyDeleteCold...spasms...bad......Heating pad...GOOOOOOD!!!!
ReplyDeleteYesterday's boot camp was both tiring and energizing. Three miles had a bit to do with the tiring part, but all the training in preparation gave me energy to train further.
ReplyDeleteBut it was still cold....
Yesterdays boot camp was much easier than last weeks because I knew the expectations and that I had to give everything that I had. The first mile was freezing, but I got a great time and when we had to do a second one I was very surprised. I did feel stronger though, when I finished. When we had to do a third one it was so easy because I already did two and that I didn't think of it as a mile, I thought about it as ONLY five laps. I'm so ready for next week.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was a bad day because I was about to barf after my second mile. I need to improve my speed in order to earn my black belt. I need to beat my time which is 7:58. Good luck! ~ Kai S.
ReplyDeleteyesterdays bootcamp was the most challenging for me, and a lot of other people. The one thing I mainly need to work is my speed and pacing myself. This bootcamp was the most challenging and fun bootcamp i've gone through. There is really only two more things I can say, good job eveyone and BRING IT ONE SIR!!!
ReplyDeleteThe second bootcamp was challenging. Running the second mile was really tough for me. Dragging my partner is also challenging, but I know it is making me stronger. Some of the exercises are really hard because the grass is cold and wet. I was proud of myself and everyone else for not giving up when we had to run the second and third mile.
ReplyDelete"Don't wish it was easier, wish you were better . . . Don't wish for less problems, wish for more skills . . . Don't wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom . . . You can do the most remarkable things no matter what happens!"
ReplyDelete~Jim Rohn
This weekend's bootcamp pushed me hard...I think almost every one of us had to use our inhalers. I was amazed that after my 3rd mile it seemed easier. I am learning that I need some more warm up before starting the timed run. It was really cold when we started and we got soaked being drug through the grass but Hannah Platt and I celebrated with ice cream when we were finished because we needed to cool down. We all deserve to celebrate how hard we work.
ReplyDeleteThis last bootcamp was very challenging. I was pushing myself the first and second mile it was very difficult. Draging each other was hard too. On my third mile I took off like a lighting bolt it was crazy. It was my fastest mile I have ever done. But with every boot camp I know I'm getting stronger and faster. Even though it was FREEZING.
ReplyDeleteIt was cool running mile 2 and 3 barefoot. My mom thought I was crazy.
ReplyDeleteDo your best no matter what.
I think this last bootcamp was the toughest one I have had yet. My mile time wasn't as fast as I wanted it to be, I will do better next week. I know we are all stronger after running the 3 miles. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteNovember 8th
ReplyDeleteToday’s candidate class was a blast. I think this class was even better than last weeks. I hope that boot camp on Saturday will be even easier than last time. I hope that I can run an 8 minute mile again.
November 10th
ReplyDeleteToday’s boot camp was way better than the first. I still can’t believe I ran 3 miles. That one felt the best. I was so happy I was smiling when I got off the track. I did it!! I was amazed when Seh Seung told us that we were doing harder stuff than a high school football team. Good job everyone!!
"Bricks in our Backpack"... is what my Seh Ssung liked to say to represent the weight of the skills that you learn.
ReplyDeleteOnce an instructor teaches you a form, weapon, self-defense or anything, it now becomes your weight, your responsibility... your Brick in your Backpack to carry. As you learn more, more bricks are placed and you become stronger as you train these skills. But realize that they are your responsibility once they are passed on to you. You must bear the weight in YOUR backpack.
Practice, Practice then Practice some more!
Last night was good but some candidates didn't now the whole flag form and that's including me. I was practicing but I was practicing what I new and that was because we weren't taught the whole form. So now I know what I need to learn and what I need to practice.
ReplyDeleteI don't know which is harder for me, bootcamp or standing up in front of someone doing a form or weapons. I practiced all the weapons before class on Tuesday, and did them properly, but in class I kept messing up. Will keep practicing and hopefully be on point tonight during class.
ReplyDeleteHi! Sorry I didn't write in sooner! This week, I've been working on forums and self defense a little, and fight sets and kick sets a lot. I ran the mile on Tues, got sub-eight, then did two more laps without realizing I had already run the mile. I found that my biggest problem is that Last bootcamp I was really nervous, but I did it anyway. I believe my body now thinks I can ONLY do it when nervous, and so it is making me sick with nerves every week. Tuesday, though, I proved my body wrong, and I am preparing myself to do the same on Saturday.
ReplyDeleteSee you tonight and Sat.!

Testing for 2nd tab
I can't wait too spar for 15 minutes because it's my favorite thing in karate. It may be hard but no matter what happens I will be the BEST SPARER EVER!
ReplyDeleteToday we worked up a sweat. I need to work on the Flag Form. My goal for Saturday on the mile is 7:40~Kai S.
ReplyDeleteAh.... A shower felt SO good after the great training we did this morning. I actually kinda liked running in the rain and I am glad that we got to work on our curriculum. I felt pretty worked out after hundreds of push-ups and squats, but I know all the conditioning is helping me get stronger for my chevron.
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed I didn't get my mile under 8 minutes today. Hopefully I will next time. I am glad we reviewed weapons today, I know I need to practice them at home. I liked all of the push-ups and squats we did today, I know they are making me stronger.
ReplyDeleteRunning the mile in the rain wasn't bad it was the wind that caused all the problems. I felt strong with the run and I thought I was doing a good time but in the end it was my slowest since bootcamp started. I will keep pushing myself to get faster. Sensei Johnny really pushed us at the dojo. The 250 pushups and squats were a killer but I know tomorrow I will be stronger for them. I really liked how Sensei broke down the forms and weapons, I learned a few things by doing it that way. I will get stronger, I will get faster!!!! That is my promise to myself!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis bootcamp was awesome!! The run was hard because of the wind but I tried my best. The pushups and the squats were not that hard. I know they will make me stronger. Working the self defenses helped me, I feel alot stronger.
ReplyDeleteThe run was really hard for me and i didn't do very well but i tried to do my best that i could. The push-ups and squats were really hard too but i understand that they made me stronger.
ReplyDeleteToday was a great boot camp. We did 250 push-ups and squats. The run was a bit tough because of the rain but we all did good. I still managed to get my time under eight still.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was very tough. The mile I didn't really mind because I love running in the rain, but I got really tired when we did all those pushups and squats. I do understand that they made me stronger and now I know what the judges will be expecting. The most important thing that I learned was that, during the actual test, the judges will be looking for how much effort we put in even if we are exhausted. Which means that no matter what happens always give everything that you have.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was a good boot camp because after the mile we went to the dojo. I cant believe we did 500 squats and push-ups total! I also need to work on my bo-staff form. That hot chocolate was awesome. I think I'm doing great on my forms. ~Kai S.
ReplyDeleteSaturday was pretty hard, i wasnt expecting to do all the push ups and squats. Next class i will try a lot harder, i know i need to work on my push ups and attitude.
ReplyDeleteNovember 16, 2012
ReplyDeleteLast nights candidate class was fun. It was fun doing the flag form for almost the whole class. It was hard trying to stay together. Great job everyone and good luck tomorrow.
November 17, 2012
ReplyDeleteThe beginning of today’s boot camp was really wet. My time for the run wasn’t great and it wasn't fun running in the rain. I'm glad we went to the dojo after the run. I can’t believe I did 250 push ups and sit ups. I was really tired when I got home. Great job hanging in there everyone!
The last bootcamp was fun because we got to run in the rain. I can't believe all the push ups and squats that we did. Everyone is doing a great job and I know we will all keep up the good work over the break.
ReplyDeleteI thought this bootcamp was probably the most hardcore bootcamp we have had. We did 250 push ups and 250 squats, and we ran the mile in the ran and wind. My run time was a little slower, but I am glad to have made it through and did not give up.
ReplyDeleteThe last bootcamp had some highs and lows. I was disappointed with my run time, given that I have improved alot over the last couple of weeks. I don't know if it was the weather or the fact that I had to cut back on my work outs for a couple of weeks. The good news is that I did all 250 push ups and squats and know that it will help me on the day of the Black Belt test. I have my workout plan in place and hope to improve my run time this weekend.
ReplyDeleteHey, lets do are best today. We need to remember are flag form. We have a couple of weeks left .See you peoples latter.....Nicholas Chalko
ReplyDeleteThe last boot camp was very difficult but the next one bring it on
ReplyDeleteIt's always nice to encounter a physical challenge like the one last Saturday- running in the cold and wind and rain. Keep being awesome, people!
ReplyDeleteTonight’s candidate class was great. I love doing the flag form. And can’t wait till next week. It was easier to stay together with the music. Great job everyone and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteI am a bit nevis about the new flag form but I love the idea of using the America flags and wihile the America song plays. I doesn't matter cause I'm going to practice it.

The kids and I ran on Thursday and this morning! The high altitude and cold temps gave us a new challenge but we never gave up! We will review the black belt material and practice the flag form this evening!
ReplyDeleteThe run this morning was the best run I'v done. I can't beleive I ran a 7:30. I am very proud of myself. Now I know if I stay focused I can do anything to get my jr. black belt.
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time getting up for the run today but I am glad I did. I had my fastest time yet. I have been working on my weapons and I am going to do more tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteShowed up for the run on Saturday, and while it was not my fastest run I am glad I went for the practice. When I got home I practiced my push ups and self defenses.
ReplyDeleteThis bootcamp might not have been an official bootcamp, but it was a good time to get out and practice my running. It was cold, but it is preparing us for the cold run we will have in December. Congrats! to those who ran there best time.
ReplyDeleteBlack belt test is coming up soon and I am nervous. I have to put my head into the game. I have been practicing my forms, self-defense, and weapons. I just realized that my favorite kick is the jumping pop up kick. I feel like I am trapped and then jump out doing a flap with my arms and kick at the same time. I have to do my best at this black belt test to earn a Christmas vacation. Now I really have to PRACTICE!
ReplyDeleteToday I had a good workout. Practicing Crane Fightset helped me train for the black belt testing and graduation. I can’t wait for the Break-a-thon. Good Luck tomorrow! ~ Kai S.
ReplyDeleteToday was a good day. My mile wasn't the best, but it was under 8 minutes. Instead of doing the forms and stuff at the end, Kiersten and I thought it would be cool to have skit, But what ever happens is fine with me. I can't wait till the graduation. It will be fun. Have FUN and TRY HARD peeps.
ReplyDeleteToday was a awesome day. The mile wasnt the best i still pushed my self good job every one on the flag form. BYE peeps
ReplyDeleteI didn't do good on my mile. 8:06 wasn't my best. Well the track turned into a lake ( flooded ) and the park run was full of turns and it was raining. Today Sehsung said a metaphor say ing that I wasn't balanced on the board that would lead me to my black belt test. So that's why I came over to shoana's house to practice a bit of stuff. I'm still not that balance but I am gaining it.
ReplyDeleteToday's run was wet and I didn't run my fastest but I will work hard to come in under 8 next week. Working with Johnnie helped me know what i need to work on!
ReplyDeleteI loved today's run! I ran my fastest at 8:08! I only have 8 seconds left to take off! It was a bummer because Emily sprained her ankle :( I'm really hoping that we all get to test as a Family! I know what I need to work on and so I will practice, practice, practice!!! We are getting together with the Melvins tomorrow to practice and break boards! We will not quit!!!!
ReplyDeleteToday wasn't a good day, I sprained my ankle at the beginning of the run! I tried to continue but it just hurt to bad. I went to the doctors after and they said that it looks like a sprain. They said that by Monday I should be able to put some weight on it. I'm hoping that by next week I will be better!
ReplyDeleteI am glad I got a chance to work on some things at the dojo after class today. I feel lucky to have such supportive team mates. Thank you. I am working on what I need to do this weekend and I am going to get some extra practice this week. The break-a-thon was fun. I am excited to practice more on Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteSaturday was a long training session for me, but I know that it helped me earn a bit of my black belt. I need to work on my four-station breaks. My favorite kick is the flying side-kick. The toughest kick for me is the slip-step axe. I can’t wait for next Saturday. Good Luck! ~ Kai S.
ReplyDeleteThis weeks bootcamp was especially wet, and that means that the track was entirely flooded. The track that we ran seemed a little longer, but I still had a decient run time. I can't wait to practice the four corner breaks during Tuesday's class.
ReplyDeleteSaturdays bootcamp was tough. The track was flooded and I found the run around the park to be harder, and even though I did not come in under 8 minutes, I know I will make next bootcamp. Today I practice breaking boards, forms and self defense with David and Kai.
ReplyDeleteI knew the track would be messy on Saturday, but was not prepared to see that it was under a couple inches of water. We ended up running the path around the park instead. I wish I could say that the weather conditions hindered me, but I don't feel like they did. I am both happy and dissappointed, happy to have stay at 8 minutes and 22 seconds, but sad that I was not able to get more time off. Will continue to train and hope that at the next bootcamp I will be no more than 10 seconds of my goal time.

ReplyDeleteTonight’s candidate class was great. I love doing the flag form. And can’t wait till next week when we do it again. It was easier to stay together with the music. Great job everyone and have a happy Thanksgiving.

ReplyDeleteNice job everyone at the break-a-thon. Now I know I need to work on my flying side kicks. Today’s boot camp was harder. It was harder running on the sidewalk. I did okay but I know I can do better. We went over a lot at the dojo. By the time I got home my hair was still wet but I felt that I had a good work out. I’m glad I had a chance to practice my creative form some place where I didn’t have to worry about hitting anything.
This Saturday was excellent. I think I need to work on my Flag Form, however.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was amazing. I loved breaking boards and I think I was quite good. After karate I was ready to do something a lot. So my dad told me to do push ups. So I did.
ReplyDeleteThurs. showed me just how much I need to know my selfdefense in case my partner's slightly off, so for the next two weeks, I'll be cramming evrything in, but I'll work on my self defense harder than ever.
ReplyDeleteBoot camp today, the run was incredible "good job everyone." I'm happy that we got to practice the test it made me more comfortable.
ReplyDeleteCant wait to see all you guys on tuesday!
Bye Peeps
Today I made my best time on my run which is 7:29. I had a lot of confidence while I was doing forms and weapons. I can’t believe how close Black Belt testing is. I plan to earn my Black Belt and prepare to earn my Black Belt. Good Luck! ~Kai S.
ReplyDeleteSaturday's bootcamp was amazing! Everyone did so good on the run and I am still digesting the fact that I ran the mile in 7min and 56sec. I am also thankful that we went over the format of the Black Belt test. Practicing the forms over and over again in front of someone is great practice for me, as I have not done alot of that over the past couple of years. Kristy and I will be working hard on our kickboxing sets and we will be ready to show how awesome we are during the test. Can't belive it is almost here and I wish everyone the best of luck.
ReplyDeleteSaturday's bootcamp was good.I ran my fastest mile yet in 7 minutes and 45 seconds. Now I know I can do it! Breaking boards was fun but challenging. I have been practicing everthing including the breaks.I can't wait until Tuesday for practice!
ReplyDeleteLast bootcamp was extraordinary! Everybody ran their fastest time yet, so now everybody knows they can do it. For next Saturday's bootcamp I hope that we get to do some extra practice breaks to help us pass the test. I can't believe that there is only the one bootcamp left, then the test begins.
ReplyDeleteI am so excited that Debbie and I finally completed the run in under 8 min.! We have been working really hard and this acommplishment shows that hard work pays off! I'm happy that we reviewed a little about how the blackbelt test will be set up and I now know what I need to work on! The kids and I went over to the Melvins today and we all practiced the different kicks, tiger fight set and practiced breaking boards! We all are feeling more confident with the practice! I can't believe it's almost time!
ReplyDeleteI am glad that everyone came in under 8 minutes this run!I liked the way Seh Sung gave us a review of how the blackbelt test will run. Melvin JR. and I practiced tiger fight set today and I think we look alot better. I will continue to practice!
ReplyDeleteI didn't do very good on the run and i had a lot of trouble with the plank and 2nd set of push-ups for some reaon.I cut and bruised my foot today while breaking a board, but i'm as ready as ever for the test.

ReplyDeleteThis weeks candidate classes were great. I was really worried about breaking boards but I could do it. I just need to work a little harder. I feel better after we went over all the forms and self defense moves. Now I know what I really need to work on.

ReplyDeleteBoot camp was awesome. I can’t believe I ran a 7:47 minute mile. That’s my best time ever. It was great to refresh my memory, with forms, fight sets, and going over different kicks. I was so happy.
Saturday was good and it was good to refresh my memory on some of the fight sets. I cant wait till boot camp is over. I hope everyone gets there Black Belt. Great job peeps.
ReplyDeleteI was happy with my mile time this week. I am looking forward to the test on Sunday. I am glad we went over our weapons. I am going to work really hard the next 2 weeks.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was ok. I hope u all get ur Black Belts. Cant wait till graduation. LETS DO THIS THING PEEPS.
ReplyDeleteIt's almost black belt testing and also Christmas break. I'm both excited and nervous at the same time. But Sehsung says that i am doing well. I am feeling stronger than ever. So no matter what happens at my test, I will give it all I GOT!
ReplyDeleteEach and every one of you yelled today, "I BELIEVE!!!" As you go throughout the rest of this week (and the rest of life as well), think about that. You all said it, so you must believe it. You must believe in order to believe. Confusing, but it works. I have watched you all in classes for a long time now. It's like Seh Ssung says. It doesn't matter how small you are, or how clumsy outside of karate, whether you're a boy or girl, child, teen, or adult, I BELIEVE in every one of you. But you must believe in yourself. From here on out, we are one, as a group, and the best you can do is to do your best, and help the others achieve the same goal.
ReplyDeleteI Believe.
Do you?

Today my time for the run was 7:39. I continue to practice my board-breaking. I can’t wait for testing! My favorite part about today was Crane Fightset. I BELIEVE!!!! Good Luck! ~Kai S.
ReplyDeleteToday’s boot camp was great. I’m so happy it didn’t rain while we were running the mile. My mile time was great. At the dojo I broke four thick boards. I’m glad we went over the crane fight set and the cobra fight set. Testing begins tomorrow. I believe!! Good luck everyone!
ReplyDeleteOnly a few days until I test for my chevron! It has been a great journey pushing myself past my limits and training hard a boot camp. With a 7:06 run and the ability to do 100 push-ups and a 5-minute plank, I know I will blow my last test away. I can't wait for the test on Thursday! I BELIEVE!!!
ReplyDeleteOnly four more days guys!!!!!!!!!! I know that I am ready. I have trained very hard and now I can achieve a 6:40 run, 100 pushups, a 5 minute plank and of course the 50 squats. What has made me achieve all these goal is that I BELIEVE. It is so simple yet It means so much. It has gotten me through the really tough times were I wanted to give up. Now I look back and can see how far I have come and I wouldn't change this journey for anything. I am ready for the tests ahead because..., I BELIEVE!!!
ReplyDeleteI am so proud of myself for making the mile time today! A year ago, it would have been hard to believe I could get my time under 8 minutes. I hope I am able to do as good on the last 2 days of testing as I did today. Good luck everyone! I BELIEVE!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so proud of myself on my run today...I can't believe that it is time to test for our black belts time has gone by so fast. I'm so excited for the week to come but I know I need to stay focused on my goal for black belt. With all the training and practice I'm ready!!!! Good luck to everyone this week. I know in our hearts we will al do great. Because I BELIEVE!!!!
ReplyDeleteSaturday's boot camp was very important for me, as it gave me the confidence to know that running an 8 min mile was not a one time occurrence for me. I am so proud of myself and my kids for doing such a good on the run today! Now it is time to focus on the syllabus. Looking forward to taking on the next challenge.
